King County

In Focus page I created

At King County, I was responsible for creating and maintaining the county's top-level Web pages, including the homepage. The King County homepage receives close to a million hits a month and I worked closely with the King County's Executive Office to ensure that their goals for the page and Web site were being met. I also helped graphic designers, developers and non-technical employees create and maintain their agency Web sites. In addition, I helped create and maintain branding, technical and accessibility standards.

Problems solved:
While I was at King County, the Web site lacked a content management system — pages had to be updated and uploaded manually. To make changes easier to the homepage, I broke the page up into include files. Include files made it easy to find and edit just the part of the homepage that needed to be changed. I also created a special include file for emergency information. It lived in a directory that could be edited by employees who would not normally have permission to update the homepage. In the event of an emergency, information could be published to the homepage even if no one on the Web team was available.

I also streamlined the code on the pages that I inherited. While maintaining the existing look and feel, I removed all font tags, extraneous tables and other unnecessary HTML, replacing it with bare bones HTML and CSS. This made the pages easier to maintain and faster for users to download.
